I follow many stages when performing keyword research and many things are taken into account including the size of your business, the services/products you offer, your share of voice, website content, competitors and backlinks. Your present keywords are also analysed to see how competitive they are.
Various tools are used when analysing your keywords. These include Google AdWords for finding keyword effectiveness and competitiveness, Google Trends for comparing similar phrases, browser tools for analysing SERPs and tools for analysing competitor keywords.
